My favourite 7/8 rhythm is with 2 8ths for a pickup, then 3+2+2, but of course I’ve want to subvert that in various places. Anyway, this little piece is fairly hard for me to play, and deeper acquaintance would likely yield all sorts of wondrous treasures and more than a few monstrosities, as various tempi and articulations were attempted.
The title isn’t just a kind of steady boil, but also Shetland dialect for summer, which there probably means it doesn’t get dark before it’s dawn again, and is a bit warmer and not quite so windy, on average. Despite my fascination for northern islands, I haven’t been to many, and I don’t think I’ll ever go there now.
