SCARED STRAIGHT | Resident Evil Requiem

Grace’s underground section in Resident Evil 9 feels like descending into something ancient and alive. The deeper she goes beneath the ruined settlement, the less the tunnels resemble man-made structures. Rusted mining shafts slowly transition into damp stone corridors covered in black fungal growths that pulse faintly in the dark like breathing organs. Water drips constantly from overhead pipes, echoing through the cramped passages while distant metallic screeches make it impossible to tell whether something is hunting her — or trapped nearby. Unlike the action-heavy areas earlier in the game, Grace’s section focuses on tension and isolation. Ammunition is scarce, flashlight batteries barely last, and enemies avoid direct confrontation at first, instead stalking her through narrow maintenance tunnels and abandoned laboratory chambers. Strange symbols scratched into the walls hint that the underground complex existed long before the modern facility built around it. The deeper levels reveal grotesque experiments fused into the environment itself: walls twitching with exposed veins, collapsed elevators sealed shut by hardened organic matter, and containment rooms where failed creatures still move in the shadows. By the end of the section, the underground stops feeling like a location and starts feeling like the inside of a living organism — trapping Grace in a slow descent toward whatever created the infection in the first place.
