Argonne’s Science 101 series takes you back to the basics, with plain-language explanations of the scientific concepts behind our pivotal discoveries and our biggest innovations. In this Science 101: What Is Scale-Up, group leader of process R&D and scale up Trevor Dzwiniel explains how scientific discoveries move from the lab to real-world applications. Scale-up is the process of increasing production from small, laboratory-scale experiments to larger quantities that can be tested, validated, and eventually manufactured. While a few grams of a new material may be enough to prove a concept, much larger amounts are needed to understand cost, quality, and performance. By developing scalable processes and ensuring consistency, scale-up helps turn promising ideas into practical materials and technologies used across manufacturing, energy and industry.
