In this math video everything scientific notation is explained! We will begin by reviewing key vocabulary terms - base, exponent and power. We will review that a power is composed of a base and an exponent. The exponent tells us how many times to multiply the base by itself. We will then compare and understand how a number is written in standard form and scientific notation. Standard form is a form of a number that is written using base-ten notation. Scientific notation is a product of two factors, where the first factor is a number with an absolute value greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and the second factor is a power of 10. We will learn 4 simple steps to write a number in scientific notation. We will learn that a value less than one will have a negative exponent and a value greater than one will have a positive exponent. We will compare values in scientific notation to determine how many times greater one value. Student practice is embedded in the lesson with modeled exemplar solutions.
