SCREW DESIGN IN SOLIDWORKS
To add fasteners from the SolidWorks toolbox, open the task pane, find the fastener you want to add, and drag and drop it where you want it. Automatic mates will be added if you select a compatible edge. Once you drop the fastener, you can specify all the type settings. Bolt Sizes Chart & Metric Bolt Dimensions Thread Size Major Diameter (mm) Minor Diameter (mm) M4 4.0 3.242 M4.5 4.5 3.688 M5 5.0 4.134 M6 6.0 4.917 To measure thread size, you can use a caliper, thread gauge, or nut/bolt gauge. You can also measure the thread by hand. Using a caliper Hold the fastener against a ruler Measure the outer diameter of the thread in millimeters Measure the distance between adjacent peaks or valleys of the thread in millimeters Using a thread gauge Use a thread gauge to measure the pitch or lead of a thread Check the thread against each form until you find a match Using a nut/bolt gauge Use a nut/bolt gauge to measure the thread size Each individual gauge features a male threaded stud on one end and a female threaded hole on the other Measuring by hand Measure from one side of the thread crest to the other Measure and mark one inch from the end of the fastener Count the number of threads between the end of the fastener and the mark Thread size components The size of a metric screw or bolt is specified as diameter, pitch, and length, in millimeters. You can also watch this video to learn more about how to identify thread pitch and size
