The theme of this album was "defining your justice," so I attempted to tell a story of when the main character (Heilgar) begins to question the sense of justice ingrained into her by her nation. Her lineage granted her powerful divine light magic granted by the goddess of light to whom the empire pledges its faith. The empire believes that spreading the word and guidance of their goddess by expanding their reign is their divine mission. Heilgar was raised believing in this mission, but a seed of doubt was eventually planted in her mind. With this piece, I attempted to tell the story of the moment that the seed of doubt was sown: during one of her first real battles of conquest in service to the empire. The first section is from the perspective of the village that the empire has its sights on. The villagers, backed up with reinforcements from a nearby garrison, have hastily set up their defenses in preparation for the empire's attack. They sing a prayer hymn to the goddess of light, asking for protection. The next section introduces the empire's army as they make their final battle preparations. It's here that we are first introduced to Heilgar's theme. Next is a moment of silence as the two forces stare each other down before battle. The silence is broken by the sounds of war horns the the rumble of an army's charge into battle. The next section is the actual battle. The sides trade blows, and Heilgar even takes a heavy hit. But ultimately, the empire prevails. The final section shows the aftermath of the battle. It's here that Heilgar realizes that the villagers and soldiers she slaughtered worship her goddess, perhaps by noticing various holy symbols around the town. If the empire's goal is the spread the good word of their goddess, why did this town of believers have to die? And that's it for my piece!
