Sense Making Math Games
Sense Making Games This video explains the different sense-making games, or routines, used in the classroom and at home to develop number sense and mathematical reasoning. Splat! is a very highly interactive number sense activity that can be used at any grade level. Students are given many dots and some "splats" of ink that are hiding equal numbers of dots. Given the total number of dots visible and hidden, students use algebraic reasoning to determine how many dots each "splat" covers. For more information about Splat!, visit https://stevewyborney.com/2017/02/splat/ Esti-Mysteries have students guess the number of items (blocks, gummy bears, etc.) in a cup given clues. The clues involve mathematics vocabulary such as "odd," "even," "less than," "prime," etc. These activities not only build students' mathematical literacy but also build students' number sense and estimation skills. They may include numbers, graphs, images, etc. Students have to choose one that they feel does not belong and supply a reason for it. The beauty of the activity is that there is no incorrect answer! For example, given a WODB consisting of the numbers 2, 3, 5, and 25, a student could say "2" doesn't belong since it is the only even number. The student could say "25" doesn't belong because it is a two-digit number. Students are constantly comparing and contrasting numerical quantities through this process, which leads to greater number sense. For more information about WODB, visit wodb.ca. Why do routines matter? As we discussed in our "choosing a math program" video, there is no perfect math program. Sense-making routines provide an additional level of support for students regardless of which program they are using.
