Sequencing Index Card
Mr John shares a tool to add to your Parent’s Toolbox: the Sequencing Index Card. Follow this advice for creating a simple, physical schedule for keeping your child focused and on track when trying to get out the door and off to school. Tips for Success: Use a large colored index card or half a sheet of colored paper - we want your child to have something tactile to hold in their hands Keep the sequence short with 3-4 items. What does your child really need to do to get out the door on time in the morning? Be sure to use all three parts: numbered steps, words and pictures. (A sketch is fine, you don’t need to be an artist.) We are intentionally tapping into three separate parts of the brain. Use the card to bring the child back on track. No yelling required. When your child has been distracted and isn’t adhering to the sequence, calmly ask what number the child is on. Bring it back to your child each time. Children ages 5 and up should be able to take ownership, so encourage them to. You aren’t likely to see results instantaneously, but keep at it and you will see improvement, resulting in less yelling and frustrations. #parentingtools
