In this episode of Shakespeare Explained we consider a theme from the play, The Tempest in depth. Learning Shakespeare is often made easier and more enjoyable when one approaches it with a sense of a theme. This is something we look at in this video on Shakespeare explained. The Tempest is a play that has had many conclusions drawn about it. Having the Tempest analysed, one particularly big idea comes through though, that I believe is supreme and central The Tempest by Shakespeare. Shakespeare seems to have been exploring an idea in this play, more than developing great characters. That idea seems to have been the notion of a Utopia. This is the tempest theme. While exploring the Tempest, it is good to ask that with the Americas being newly colonised, was Shakespeare calling for a new society which would be free from the violence, suffering and corruption of the Old World, Europe? Also, we consider whether Shakespeare was anti-colonialist and feared the harm that European settlers might incur on the Native population. Who does Caliban represent in the play? What is the meaning of the magic of Prospero? The Tempest could be classed as one of the plays about racism or colonialism.
