What happens when you remove the dog and put the learner in the hot seat? In this video, two participants take turns “training” each other using a clicker and shaping — no verbal instructions, no demonstrations, no prompts. The only information available to the learner is the timing and placement of reinforcement. This simple exercise quickly exposes how our mechanics, clarity of criteria, reinforcement strategy, and timing directly shape behavior — for better or worse. It highlights common challenges trainers face every day with their dogs, including: Inconsistent criteria and accidental reinforcement Late or unclear marker timing Poor observation and planning Learner frustration, guessing, and disengagement The impact of clean vs. muddy communication systems Training humans this way creates powerful empathy for the learner and gives trainers immediate feedback on their own habits, assumptions, and communication skills — without the emotional or welfare pressure of working a dog. These videos are used as part of The Learning Lab (aka Chicken Camp), where we break down how shaping, marker training, and reinforcement mechanics translate directly into better dog training across sports, working dogs, and pet applications. If you train dogs and want cleaner communication, more intentional reinforcement, and better learning outcomes — this exercise is a great place to start.
