There are a variety of tugs used to assist vessels in berthing and un-berthing. Tugs assist in berthing and un-berthing by either pulling or pushing.
Tugs enhance the safety of a manoeuvre, especially when entering docks, berthing/un-berthing and when navigating in restricted waters.
Ports use several tug types, they are:
o Conventional tugs – single or twin-screw – can be used to push or pull
o Tractor tugs – Voight Schneider or the Azimuth tractor tugs – are very manoeuvrable and used by most ports today for both pushing and pulling operations.
