The Short 184 was the world's first operational torpedo bomber. In that role, it was the first to launch a successful attack and the first to sink a ship with an airborne torpedo, though not in the same incident. More often used in the reconnaissance and light bomber roles, it was in the former capacity that it became the first heavier than air craft to spot and report on the presence of an enemy fleet at the Battle of Jutland.
