Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder and elbow consultant and surgeon, Mr Nick Ferran discusses the various causes of shoulder dislocations. Sports injuries and high energy forces are the most common causes. Some patients suffer from generalised laxity, which can make shoulder dislocation a recurring problem. A high-energy impact can cause the shoulder ball to come out of its socket. As the shoulder ball comes out from its socket, the condition can generate extreme pain and limit the movement of the arm. In some cases of instability, the shoulder doesn’t fully come out of joint but the patient may feel the sensation of the shoulder wanting to dislocate. The first step of shoulder dislocation treatment is an emergency relocation of the shoulder joint. Treatment then becomes a combination of damage inspection, surgery, and physiotherapy. Mr Ferran talks about the surgery requirements and different types of surgeries for shoulder dislocations. Mr Ferran explains the importance of physiotherapy during shoulder dislocation recovery. The assistance of a physiotherapist helps patients to recover their movement, control of the joint, and strength. After a simple dislocation, patients can often get the shoulder moving after a few days but full recovery may take months. After surgery for shoulder dislocation, return to sports can take up to 6 months and return to normal may take up to a year.
