Silent Cracking Stone Technology
CSIR-CBRI Technology | Expansive Mortar for Silent Cracking of Stones Conventional stone extraction methods, such as blasting and wire-cutting, pose significant challenges, including dust and noise pollution, ground vibrations, safety risks, high energy consumption, and regulatory constraints. To address these limitations, CSIR-CBRI has developed an indigenous Expansive Mortar technology for non-explosive, controlled cracking of stones. The formulation is calcium oxide–based with proprietary additives, enabling tuneable and time-controlled expansion suitable for a wide range of lithologies—from sandstone to hard granite. The mortar is mixed on-site with water, poured into pre-drilled holes, and achieves silent cracking within 3–6 hours, eliminating the need for explosives. Key Technical Advantages - Non-explosive, vibration-free and sound-proof operation - Environment-friendly and non-hazardous composition - Controlled and predictable expansion kinetics - Cost-effective and scalable for quarry and dimensional stone applications - Proven performance through field trials in Rajasthan With the global expansive mortar market projected to grow from 7.55 million tons (2024) to 11.0 million tons by 2030, this technology offers strong potential for commercialisation, deployment, and sustainable mining practices in India. A robust alternative aligned with environmental compliance, worker safety, and next-generation quarrying. CSIR-CBRI congratulates Dr L.P Singh (Former Sr Pr Scientist and now DG, NCCBM), Dr Srinivasarao Naik B and their team at Building Materials and Environmental Sustainability (BMES) for this innovative technology. #CSIRCBRI #SilentCracking #SustainableMining #ConstructionMaterials #GreenInnovation #TechnologyTransfer #MakeInIndia #CSRImpact
