Silver Lining - TaPe
[Verse 1] I practiced my gold-medal face in the mirror for years, Half-smile, humble nod, one cinematic tear. Had the speech in my pocket, had the thank-yous all planned, Now I’m biting the inside of my “good job” hand. Flashbulbs popping like fireworks over his name, I’m standing one step lower in the same exact frame. They say, “That was legendary” — yeah, I know what they mean: The part where I almost became somebody’s screensaver dream. [Pre-Chorus] I broke myself chasing a tenth of a second, Got the shiniest proof that I nearly perfected The art of losing beautifully under bright lights— A polished little heartbreak reflecting the white. [Chorus] I got the silver — everybody clap nice, Tell me “what an achievement” while I die inside. He got the anthem, I got the “you’ll get ’em next time,” He got the headline, I got perspective and lime. Ooh — I’m second to none… except one. Ooh — so close I can taste the sun. I got the silver, silver — look how good I look sad, One inch from forever and unreasonably mad. [Post-Chorus] Hey! — Smile for the cameras, chin up, kid. Hey! — Try not to say what you really just did. Hey! — Shake his hand, don’t make a scene. You’re the king of almost, the prince of “if only,” the duke of “what could’ve been.” [Verse 2] Mom said, “You’re my champion.” Dad said, “That’s my boy.” Coach said, “Use this pain.” I said, “Cool, what’s the return policy?” My rival said, “Insane race, man.” I said, “Respect.” Then pictured karma tying both his shoes together mid-step. Reporters in my face with the grief safari lens: “How does silver feel tonight?” Like losing to a friend. I’m trying to be noble, evolved, and grateful, But my eye keeps twitching every time they say “so inspirational.” [Pre-Chorus] I dreamed of the gold, the confetti, the roar, Now I’m backstage Googling “what is silver for?” A tray? A mirror? A lesson? A moon? A very expensive way to ruin a Tuesday in June? [Chorus] I got the silver — everybody clap nice, Tell me “what an achievement” while I die inside. He got the anthem, I got the “you’ll get ’em next time,” He got the headline, I got perspective and lime. Ooh — I’m second to none… except one. Ooh — so close I can taste the sun. I got the silver, silver — look how good I look sad, One inch from forever and unreasonably mad. [Bridge — reveal / twist] (Okay. Fine. Full disclosure.) It was the World Finals in Competitive Sleeping. I had it in the bag till the crowd started screaming. I woke up, threw my arms up, yelled, “LET’S GOOOO!” Automatic deduction. Rookie move. I know. He “won” the gold and never even opened his eyes. They played the anthem twice. Still no signs of life. They brought in coffee, drums, and a leaf blower fan— I took silver, shook hands, and drove home in a van. [Breakdown] He’s snoring in glory, I’m awake with receipts, I lost on a technicality and gained a hit beat. They crowned a nap king, but I got the song— And the whole world singing means who really won? [Final Chorus] I got the silver — now the joke’s on fate, He got the gold medal, I got the gold release date. He got a podium, I got a crowd that screams, Turns out second place is rocket fuel for better dreams. Ooh — I’m second to none… except one Who’s still asleep, somebody check his lungs. I got the silver, silver — and honestly, not bad… ’Cause he won one event, but I just won the aftermath. [Outro] Wrong color, right story. Big feelings, cheap glory. I came in second, looked tragic, then laughed— Now pass me the mic… and my silver-plated aftermath.
