Dr Cheryl Martin demonstrates the pressure immobilisation technique for the immediate management of a suspected snake bite. Although this is a simulation, we did encounter a snake on our run that day. Please be careful on your runs an keep your eyes open. Quick Look Summary Sheet 1. Call for help - Call EMS on 000 and state type of emergency Notes : in bushland if you have a smartphone with compass app ( and reception) – give coordinates if you can Note in some races there will be also be an emergency contact on the back of your bib 2. Administer any immediate resuscitation if required This still takes precedence over step 3 3. Apply the pressure immobilisation technique - Apply pressure over wound/bite site - Do not suck the venom or wash bite site or remove clothing - bandage from the bottom of the limb back up towards the heart ( over any clothing) - Firm bandaging to limit lymphatic spread of venom should be difficult to pass a finger under but not restrict arterial blood flow ( should not have a tourniquet effect) - leave a loop of bandage at the bite site so that it is identifiable for emergency staff - immobilise the limb ( joint above and below bite site) 4. Reassure the casualty and keep them calm and warm until help arrives If you are on your own apply the PIT and wait for help to arrive / or apply and get yourself to the nearest access to help Resus.org.au/guidelines
