The metasurface is the two-dimensional analogue of the metamaterial. It is a spatially heterogeneous array of nanoscale resonant elements (called meta-atoms) that can, in general, alter the amplitude, phase, spectrum and polarization values of an incident wave-front in a very short propagation distance and with subwavelength resolution in the transverse plane.
