Architectural Building codes today have saved cities over $132 billion dollars in losses from natural disasters. But, this wasn’t always the case. In the U.S. alone, we lost hundreds of thousands of lives in the 20th century due to buildings that were not designed to withstand disasters such as earthquakes, fires and hurricanes. Today, Architects and Engineers are designing buildings with more stringent requirements than ever. In an effort to elucidate what the code is, this is an overview of where our modern building codes come from, and a discussion about whether buildings can inherently be safer today.
