Sam Fafiolu arrived at his PhD by building on everything he had a plant biology undergraduate, a bioinformatics masters, and the quiet influence of watching people in his church community use education as a tool for transformation. Now a first-year PhD student in the UK studying how wheat responds to multiple simultaneous abiotic stresses, Sam is trying to close a gap he believes the field has been dancing around: researchers keep studying plants under single stress conditions, but farmers face several at once. His work is less about one crop and more about the systems around measuring stress itself.
