Jamie Lucas Campbell is a PhD candidate at Queen's University Belfast studying the intersections of blackness and queerness in the US military, specifically how Don't Ask Don't Tell, the policy that outed over 13,000 service members between 1993 and 2011, fell hardest on those who were already navigating discrimination by virtue of being black. Before Belfast, Jamie worked in television production, political campaigns, and public affairs, including the Obama White House. The distance across the Atlantic, he says, is what makes the critique possible. In this episode, we talk about why his research is really a decolonial project, the intellectual safety issues academia refuses to name, why the essay needs to go, and what it means to build research that is genuinely emancipatory rather than just diverse on the surface.
