This lecture describes various mechanisms of size reductions.
The mechanisms involved in size reduction are: 1) Cutting (Shear) 2) Impact 3) Compression & 4) Attrition.
Cutting (Shear) is produced when particle is compressed between the edges of two hard surfaces crossing each other.
Impact occurs when the material is more or less stationary and is hit by a moving object at high speed or the moving particle strikes a stationary surface.
Compression occurs when the material is crushed by the application of pressure.
Attrition occurs when the pressure is applied on the material as in compression, but the surfaces are moving relative to each other.
