Eutrophication occurs when bodies of water become more productive due to the inflowing nutrients, which fuel sludge buildup and toxic methane emissions. Basically, more nutrients = more vegetative biomass = more sludge and methane production. This cascading effect starts with humans, and doesn’t just stop with methane production.
