Snow Fleas - Springtails - Econo Challenge

Snow Fleas are not fleas at all, but a type of insect called a springtail. Springtails have a tail-like appendage that unfolds like a spring causing them to jump. Most springtails are small and difficult to see but the snow flea is observable with the naked eye on warm winter days when it is active. Its dark blue colour contrasts sharply with the background of white snow and can appear like moving dirt. Snow Fleas, like the ones shown in this video, contain an anti-freeze like protein that allows them to survive in sub-freezing temperatures.
