A customer recently had an issue where he was using configurations to manage the visibility of items in a large assembly (a truck mounted crane). See tip 12 for more on this.
But when he went to place the assembly in a higher level he had to define the configuration again.
What he needed to do was turn on the Open As Configuration setting. This allows us to place a sub-assembly with a particular configuration already applied. This is done by right clicking in the Parts Library panel.
Because configurations are single level (at present), if you need to control visibility in the new, higher level then you need to create more configurations at that level.
