Solid Roof Decking

Having a solid roof deck is critical for your roof to do its job. Roof decking, or roof "sheathing" is the surface that your roof is built on. Without a solid surface, the rest of the roof surface could fail. In this video, we have an example of plywood that is in mostly good condition. There are some sections that are rotted out and far from solid. We did not feel comfortable roofing over this decking, so we removed this board and installed a new sheet of plywood. Most local building codes require solid decking to support the roof. As licensed contractors, we are obligated to build to code, and solid roof sheathing is an important component. Also, roof material manufacturers will only validate their warranty if the wood decking is in acceptable condition. Nailing or drilling roof material into rotted, wet, or failed roof decking is a recipe for roof failure. The roof material will not stay in place under stress if the wood it's connected to is not solid.
