SolidWorks Square Spring
In this tutorial, we will use hybrid modeling techniques to create a square spring in Solidworks. Hybrid modeling is the combination of Surfacing and Solid Bodies to create complex shapes. This design methodology is called Hybrid Modeling and it enables you to create a lot of complex parts in SolidWorks. Lets start by opening a new part To create our spring, start by two sketches on the top plane. Fist we’ll create a sketch of a circle with a diameter of 5 inches, and close out of the sketch. Then we’ll create a sketch of a line running from the circle’s edge to it’s center. Now under the features tree, expand out the curves table and select Helix and Spiral We’ll set the pitch to be constant and define it by Height and Pitch. Set the height to 3 inches and the pitch to .25 inches and set the start angle to 0 degrees And Hit the green check box. Now we need to create a swept surface of the line sketch we made, using the helix as our path. This creates this complex corkscrew surface. We’re going to use a surface extrude to trim away at the sweep to create our path for the square spring. Let’s open a new sketch on the top plane and create a center point box with a width of 3 inches and a height of 2 inches and add a fillet of .125 inches to each corner. Now select the sketch and click on surface extrude Make sure it extends out past the end of the sweep. Now lets open up the trimming tool and select standard trim. We’ll use the extruded surface at the trimming tool. And select the sweep outside of the extrude to create our trim. Now our sweep has the square profile we’re looking for. We’ll create a new 3D sketch from the sweep, and set the center lines to construction. Now the last step is to create the solid sweep, using the 3D sketch as the path. Since the profile for the spring wire is round, we can simply use the circular profile selection and set the diameter to .125 inches. Select the sketch for the path and hit the green check box. Our last step is to set the material, lets set it to plain carbon steel This has been a quick tutorial on created a square spring using a hybrid modeling technique .
