LaFontaine Deep Sparkle Pupa/ Sparkle Pupa Emergent (Gary LaFontaine) HOOK: Standard hook, heavy wire. #14-#18 THREAD: 8/0 or 70d, any color SHROUD: Aunt Lydias or other antron yarn ABDOMEN: dubbing, any type [LEGS: brown soft hackle ] OR [WING: Deer Hair and TAIL: 6 strands of shroud cut to form trailing wisp ] HEAD: black ostrich NOTE: The version with the deer hair and trailing wisp is the emergent version. The version with just legs is the deep version. This fly can be a matted mess in your flybox as the hook barbs tangle in the shrouds. Use a slotted flybox, or better yet, barbless hooks. Substitutions/Variations: The Antron is the magic ingredient, reputed to hold very small air bubbles creating a pupal shine. Gary LaFontaine was specific about some color combinations, but to get started you will be fine with any greens and yellows , and the standard light colored antron shroud. Fishing Tips: The Deep Emerger should be fished deep, even weighted or beaded, and the Sparkle Emerger is for the top couple feet of the water column, conveniently in reach of a typical dropper under your adult caddisfly.
