Uganda’s political landscape has once again been shaken by controversy surrounding Anita Among, one of the country’s most powerful and polarizing political figures. As Speaker of Parliament, Among has risen rapidly within Uganda’s ruling establishment, consolidating influence over legislative affairs and national politics. Yet her rise has increasingly been overshadowed by allegations of corruption, questions about unexplained wealth, and criticism over controversial legislation passed under her leadership. In recent weeks, pressure on Among has intensified as public debate over her leadership and political future grows louder ahead of Uganda’s 12th Parliament leadership contests. Reports from Ugandan media indicate that some political allies within the ruling establishment have distanced themselves from her amid mounting scrutiny over her lifestyle and accumulation of wealth. One of the major issues fueling the controversy is renewed public attention on corruption allegations that have followed Among for several years. In 2024, both the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on her over accusations linked to corruption and abuse of public office. The U.S. State Department stated that sanctions targeted officials accused of using public positions for personal benefit at the expense of Ugandan citizens. The scandal has resurfaced strongly in 2026 after fresh complaints were reportedly filed with Uganda’s Inspectorate of Government demanding investigations into her declared assets and wealth disclosures under the Leadership Code Act. Critics argue that her lavish lifestyle, including reports of luxury acquisitions, has amplified public suspicion during a period when many Ugandans continue to face economic hardship. At the same time, Among remains a deeply influential figure within Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Supporters portray her as a strong and decisive leader who has defended Uganda’s sovereignty and conservative values. She has repeatedly defended herself against international criticism, especially regarding her support for Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act. Among has argued that foreign sanctions were politically motivated and tied to her support for what she describes as Ugandan cultural values. Her tenure as Speaker has also been defined by the passage of several controversial laws. These include the Anti-Homosexuality Act and the recently debated Protection of Sovereignty Bill, legislation critics say threatens civil liberties and democratic freedoms. Human rights organizations and opposition politicians have accused Parliament under Among’s leadership of rushing contentious legislation through the House with limited scrutiny. The political fallout now appears to be widening. Reports suggest divisions are emerging even within groups that previously supported her candidacy for another term as Speaker. Observers say the growing backlash reflects broader frustration among Ugandans over governance, accountability, and inequality. Despite the criticism, Among continues to command substantial political influence and retains strong allies within the ruling establishment. Whether the ongoing scandal weakens her hold on power or strengthens her standing among supporters who see her as unfairly targeted remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Anita Among has become one of the defining and most controversial figures in Uganda’s contemporary politics.
