Today’s topic: Sponge Magic The magic happens in the spectator's hands 1925 Jesse Lybarger performed “Phantom Balls” for an IBM ring in Pennsylvania. 1925 Amos Rohn Mystic Sponge Balls In 1926, Joe Berg introduced his Cups and Balls Routine, wherein he made use of balls made of sponge instead of the usual cork 1936 Audley Walsh Phantom Balls in his book Sponge Ball Manipulation In 1944, Al Cohn and the “Sponge Ball King” sold his own sponge ball routine 1945 Robert Nelson invented the Sponge Rabbits - Peter Rabbit Goes to Town 1948 Roy Benson also used sponge balls for his Benson Bowl routine, as adapted and popularized by Don Alan. In the 1970s, Al Stevenson found a method of cutting a perfectly round sponge ball by machine. Al Goshman then discovered better, faster methods for using the same machine and purchased the rights from Stevenson to manufacture the balls en masse. “Magic By Gosh” is still in operation today.
