Built in France by Messieurs Blavier & Larpent as the home-grown rival to the Crampton, L'Aigle has the dubious honour of having the largest driving wheels of any locomotive built in France (and perhaps Europe) and the second largest of any locomotive built: a staggering 2.85m (or 9ft 4in). This is the story of the big bird which didn't take flight.*
