Sprinter EIS Lockout! And what every Sprinter owner should know

We had an unfortunate turn of events for us. Our Mercedes EIS system failed to cause our Sprinter van to lockout at the lumberyard. We are at about 191K when this happened. If you own a Sprinter and are having a similar issue it could be an EIS lockout and you will be stranded and need a tow. It's very unfortunate that this happens to a lot of vehicles with newer electronic ignition switches. While the EIS can last for a long time, most will eventually fail. The really scary thing about this is you could be seriously stranded, as Mercedes is the only one that can fix this. (Apparently, Freightliner can, as well. But after being shuffled around, we just said that it is a Mercedes, if they can't fix it, no one can.) Also, since Mercedes and Dodge split up, Dodge will no longer address this problem, as they do not own the computers after they split up between their companies. We went through a huge ordeal to get this repaired. Basically, what happens is the EIS is married to your VIN number, as well as, your key. So, the new EIS has to be ordered and installed at a Mercedes service facility, since they have to program the new EIS with their computer. My best advice to you is to tow your vehicle to the nearest Mercedes Dealership. Fortunately for us, we were still in our build stages and this had occurred on a trip to the lumberyard for supplies, so we weren't without a home for 3 weeks. (The repair, with overnighting, dependent on their availability, should only take 2-3 days and be anywhere from $700-$1,000, if it is just the EIS. If it is the steering lock and the EIS, we were quoted $1,300 - $ 1,700. Ours took Three weeks, because everyone took our car in, like they could fix it no problems, then realized they couldn't order the part, nor could they program or install it even if they could order it. Maybe the independent Mercedes Service shop could install it, but they could not order it.) . .
