I wanted the post for the railing at the bottom of the stairs to be big, heavy, and solid, and using a left over piece of 4x4" square tubing from the deck project seemed the perfect fit. I first weld on a top plate and blend the corners to match the corners on the rest of the tubing. Then I notch out holes in the bottom of the tubing so I can recess the concrete bolts inward that will secure the post. After deciding it would be best to weld the post to the bottom plate in place, so I can be sure to get the post straight up and down, I drill two holes in the concrete and get the plate bolted down tight. Then a couple tacks and some welding later, the bottom post is done. Next, I move on to installing the upper rail that I had previously finished in the farm shop.
