This song was written in tribute to the starlets of black Hollywood, Dorothy Dandridge, Eartha Kitt, and so many more whose lives exemplified romantic expression, and yet they were never fulfilled by the promise of love in their own lives. "Starlight" tells a story from the perspective of black women whose experiences often confirm that once they step into the proverbial 'starlight,' they risk objectification and ostracization.
