Statics Chapter 7.1 Internal Forces in 2D Problem We cover how to calculate the internal forces in 2D problems, using method of sections, including how to draw the free body diagram and calculation using equation of equilibrium The objective for this section, Students will be able to: a) Use the method of sections for determining internal forces in 2D load cases. Among the items that will be covered: - Why we need to know how to calculate internal forces - Sign convention for coplanar internal forces - Steps for determining internal forces - drawing free body diagrams - equation of equilibrium - Examples of problem solving for internal forces in 2D load cases One significant step is to be able to draw the free body diagram. If you are able to correctly draw the free body diagram, then half of the battle is already won. What is left is just equation of equilibrium and solving the equations. Of course, in some cases there may be some need to compute the support reaction first before we can compute the internal forces. When in static equilibrium, the acceleration of the system is zero and the system is either at rest, or its center of mass moves at constant velocity.
