The state of a classical system is specified in phase space. For a single particle the instantaneous position of the particle is specified by three position coordinates and instantaneous motion is described by three momentum coordinates. As a purely mathematical concept we may imagine a six dimensional space. This six dimensional space for a single particle is called mu-space. In case of a system of particles having degree of freedom f we need f position coordinates and f momentum coordinates to describe the system. Hence in total 2f independent variables are required to deal with the system. This six dimensional space is called Phase Space or gamma space. Thus phase space is the superposition of mu-spaces.
