Tersana mill 700mm gauge, Sindanglat mill 720 mm gauge & Jatibarang mill 600mm gauge Loco manufacturers: Du Croo & Brauns, Couillet, Jung & Maffei Although steam operation on the sugar mill railways of Java was declining in 2004, a significant amount of activity could still be seen. Few locos ventured into the cane fields with most activity restricted to the mill yards. At this time China still had the largest number of steam locomotives is revenue earning service but with few classes and only two track gauges. By contrast Java still had an interesting selection of classes, manufacturers and gauges. A few rare and unusual types were also in service. In 2014 steam is still used as motive power at some sugar mills. FarRail Tours will be visiting Java in August for one of the last chances to see real working steam in action. This is not a paid advert, just a recommendation. Go now, it will soon be too late. Music, Borobudur from the album Atmospheres by Paul McLellan. www.Jamendo.com
