Step 3: Baptism – Brief Summary with References Baptism is a key step in becoming a follower of Christ. It is a deliberate and conscious decision made by a believer who understands and accepts the gospel message. Baptism involves full immersion in water and symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through baptism, one publicly declares their faith, receives forgiveness of sins, and begins a new life in Christ. Key Points: A Command of Christ Jesus commanded baptism as part of making disciples: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them...” (Matthew 28:19). Requires Belief and Repentance Baptism is only meaningful when preceded by belief and repentance: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins...” (Acts 2:38). “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved...” (Mark 16:16). Symbol of Death and Resurrection Baptism represents dying to sin and rising to a new life: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death... that we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:4-5). New Identity in Christ In baptism, one puts on Christ and becomes part of God’s family: “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” (Galatians 3:27). In summary, baptism is a vital and scriptural step in becoming a disciple of Jesus. It must be undertaken with understanding, faith, and commitment.
