Join me for a special episode in my bonsai journey! Today, I’m digging up a Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) tree I rescued about 10 years ago from a construction site that was turning an old apple orchard into a residential area. After living in a pot for 2 years, it was buried in my garden to establish. Today is finally the day I dig it up to begin its journey into a bonsai container! You'll see me trim the roots, select the new potting position, and prepare it for its new life.About the Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana):Range: Native across North America, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, and south to North Carolina, Texas, and California.Seasonal Beauty: In spring, it features beautiful drooping, fragrant white flower spikes. In summer, it produces clusters of green berries that turn deep red or dark blue-black. Fall brings bright orange-yellow foliage. Indigenous Uses: The berries are a crucial food staple for many Indigenous peoples, often dried and mixed into pemmican. The inner bark has historically been used in medicinal teas to treat colds and stomach maladies. Health Benefits: The fruit is very high in antioxidants, vitamins, and may help with inflammation. Bonsai Potential: With its attractive bark, stunning flowers, and interesting fruit clusters, the Chokecherry is a fantastic native species for bonsai. Don't forget to like and subscribe for updates on this tree’s styling! #Bonsai #Chokecherry #TreeRescucue #PrunusVirginiana #BonsaiJourney #NativePlants #Foraging #BonsaiPotting #TreeTransformation #GardenRescue #UrbanBonsai
