As usual, there's a lot on my mind, but today we're dealing with a social issue that seems to come from a much deeper place within the jazz community... self-doubt, lack of self-esteem, and calling yourself "bad" - regardless if you believe it or not. I find it to be particularly pervasive amongst young jazz musicians, even ones that are extremely talented and above average. Where does this come from? Is this what "humility" is supposed to look like? Or is this something else? This is the conversation I want to start today... Let's get to the bottom of this and encourage more uplifting in the jazz world.
What do you think it means to "be humble", and what are some other ways you think we can encourage folks to be more confident in themselves without being arrogant about it? Let's start this conversation!
