Are wide pushups bad for you? Have you ever been told "wide grip pushups are bad for you?" Do you have shoulder pain when raising your arms to the side or overhead? Learn how to do a wide pushup without pain! In this video, we discuss why wide grip push-ups can actually be GOOD for you and IMPROVE your shoulder health to ensure you stay pain-free for life. In this video, Trevor and Vincent share a simple secret to help you do wide pushups without pain. What's the secret? You have to LEARN how to control your shoulder blades so they can help your shoulder move effectively and painlessly. Just like how squats CAN be great for the knees if your body is ready to do them, wide grip push-ups CAN be great for your shoulders too — IF your body is ready to do them. It's all about scapular control. You see, when your arms move out to the side or overhead, your shoulder blades have to move a certain way as well, in order for your shoulder bones, tendons, and ligaments not to impinge upon each other. So you need to adjust your wide pushups to accommodate. This scapular movement is called "upward rotation." And this is where the cue "back and down" has messed up A LOT of people in wide grip pushups. By unnecessarily attempting to keep your shoulder blades "back and down" as you lift your arms out to the side, you're interfering with your body's ability to produce scapular upward rotation, which needs to happen when you lift your arms to the side, otherwise you create shoulder impingement. And that's the secret to safely being able to do wide grip push-ups or any other movement with your arms out at your sides. They're not inherently dangerous. You just need to be able to achieve scapular upward rotation and not use inappropriate cues. How can you improve your scapular upward rotation and what cues should you use instead? We like the cue "wide shoulders". And if you want to get more tips on improving your shoulder upward rotation and mobility, leave us a comment below!
