Pitch in public is simple in structure: hook → problem → consequences → recommendation. The hook calls out a specific company doing something well but missing something critical. The problem names what they're missing. The consequences explain what it's costing them in time, money, or attention. The recommendation is "if I were head of marketing for a day, here's what I'd do." Every well-written pitch-in-public post follows this arc, and prospective clients see themselves in it without you ever DMing them. But there's a secondary rule that fixes 90% of weak pitch posts: the rate of revelation. I learned this from a creative writing teacher in college. It's the speed at which you reveal NEW information. Most LinkedIn posts say one thing and then spend the rest restating it in different words. The good ones say a new thing every line. I demonstrate on a student's post about a seaweed packaging company. The original opened strong: "they get 40,000 visitors but they're not capturing them." Then it said "thousands of customers slipping away every day" (same idea). Then "they lose them the moment they leave the site" (same idea again). Then a networking event metaphor (same idea, fourth time). The reader already got it in the first two sentences — the rest is filler. The rewrite uses the same word count, completely different rate of revelation. After the hook: consequences ("when you don't grab an email, you have no way of contacting them again — most customers don't buy off a landing page"). Then recommendation ("first I'd build an educational email course, second I'd plug them into a 5-day nurture sequence, third I'd run a 3-5 day formal sequence"). Same length, way more value. The bonus principle at the end is about positioning. If you're writing about something most people don't know — like "educational email course" instead of the more familiar "lead magnet" — don't see that as a negative. See it as an opportunity. Unfamiliar concepts give you the chance to educate, and education is what builds trust. If you want to learn how to pitch in public the right way, this is the playbook: hook + problem + consequences + recommendation, with every line maximizing the rate of revelation.
