How do you know if your lead is plugging, why does it matter and how to fix it.
When fishing in silty lakes, your lead can “plug” into the lakebed, dragging your rig and bait down so carp can’t find it. The go-to solution to avoid this is a helicopter rig. But there is an alternative, and that’s what I show in this video.
The technique is called ‘feathering and trapping’ the lead during the cast. Feathering slows the lead down in flight, while trapping stops it just before it hits the water, softening the landing. This keeps rigs on top of the silt, reduces tangles, and improves presentation. Together, these actions reduce the impact speed onto the silt, so the lead lands softer and settles on top instead of burying into it. A softer landing also helps your rig straighten out, which massively reduces tangles and ensures your hookbait is sitting perfectly where the carp can easily find it.
