We give more details of where extra dimensions come from in bosonic string theory than is found in popular science videos.
The idea is to build the partition function and use its symmetries to show that D=26.
The intuition was inspired by John Baez' lecture: "Why 24 is my favourite number"
https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/numbers/24_waterloo.pdf
Assuming the Riemann Zeta function trick to sum over a divergent sum , our approach shows (D-2)/24 is an integer. The partition function is actually a modular form!
The book in the intro is "a first course in string theory" by Barton Zwiebach, but it does not use the partition function method to reach D=26.
The video was encouraged by Curt Jaimungal and Theories of Everything
