PAST BOARD EXAM PROBLEMS
Structural Engineering & Construction
Situation 9
A footing 2m wide, 2m long, and 0.45m thick carries a square column 0.40x0.40m on its center. Given the following:
Effective Depth = 0.35 m
f’c = 28 MPa
fy = 415 MPa
Allowable stresses at ultimate loads:
For two-way shear = 1.76 MPa
For wide beam shear = 0.88 MPa
1. Based on the two-way shear, what is the allowable axial load (kN) at ultimate condition? (1828.6 kN);
2. Based on the wide beam shear, find the allowable axial load (kN) at ultimate condition. (2327 kN); and
3. The design moment at ultimate loads at the face of the column is 300 kN-m. How many 20mmϕ bars are required? (8 bars).
