I said something like "maybe something will break so I can actually fix it instead of doing maintenance." Well it did. A tire shop broke a wheel stud, then while I was replacing it, a lug nut seized onto another wheel stud so I had to break that one off. What is probably happening is metal shavings or other debris is filling in the thread and causing them to gall. Increased heat and pressure deform the threads and cause them to bind together, effectively bonding the nut to the bolt. The job was relatively straightforward, take the wheel off, remove the brake caliper and rotor, hammer out the old wheel studs, install new studs, then reassemble everything.
