Surviving Computer Science - 5 Tips to succeed in your degree program Studying computer science is a challenge, but many of us have made it through a bachelor's program and ultimately made our way into the industry as software engineers, game developers, data scientists and more. Personally, I did my undergraduate studies years ago at San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!). I started out as a chemistry major and moved onto computer science in the middle of my undergraduate college years. Sometimes I preferred to spend hours gaming and hanging out with friends rather than focusing on my studies when I knew I had a project deadline or midterm coming up. This made me feel great at the moment, having fun with friends, but the immediate reward would always wear off. Then the results of skipping out on the hard work would hurt my grades and make me question why I majoring in computer science. At one point during my junior year, something clicked and I decided to focus and work hard. I cut out a majority of my gaming, kept working out and playing competitive sports, and ultimately kicked ass in my classes. Did I lose out on some outings with friends? Yes. But my close friends never held it against me and were stoked to see me happy and doing well. As I began to work hard and focus on my projects and exams, I noticed a stronger interest in my coursework and major. The immediate effort that I was now putting into my studies got me more involved with my peers, and the entire experience became a fun one. So, if you're currently feeling like computer science it hard and you are questioning your capability to finish your studies, then take a step back and remember the tips in this video. Computer science is on the surface a hard subject to those that don't step out of their box to learn by working hard.
