The soccer sweeper is less common for professional teams. The soccer sweeper position is not as common in the modern game, but usually wear the shirt number 4. The sweeper, also known as a libero, is Italian for “free.” The sweeper acts a defender without any marking responsibilities who lines up behind the other defenders and is free to disrupt the opposition however they please. The sweeper acts as a type of center-back who sweeps away the ball if an opponent manages to pass through or dribble past the line of defensemen. The sweeper has fallen out of favor in recent years, as this position almost always ensures that you cannot catch the other team off-sides when you have a roaming defender behind the line of defense. Sweepers are usually faster than average and must be great at reading the game since they are given the ability to roam to wherever support is needed. Because the sweeper can take possession of the ball by dispossessing an opposing dribbler or more commonly by cutting off a passing lane, they usually need good passing skills to create a quick counterattack. Because of the sweeper being behind the other defenders, they often direct their teammates on what to do and who to mark based on everyone’s positioning and the sweeper’s vision of the field. Skills needed to play the sweeper position in youth soccer: - Great vision and ability to read the game - Fast reaction time - Good defending skills - Ability to pass the ball after dispossessing the other team - Communication and leadership abilities - Judging when to tackle Advantages of being a sweeper player: - Can roam to the portion of the defense where help is needed. - Often starts the counterattack. - Has the best defensive point-of-view, which allows the sweeper to direct the defense. Disadvantages: - A mistake at this position often ends up as a goal for the other team. - Generally, they do not receive the glory for a win but receive criticism for a loss. - Often prevents the other team from being caught offside does the sweeper position soccer.
