A quick demonstration of running the game with the sprites I ripped from the PS1 version. Some of these have different sprites that are interesting and arguably better. They are not problem free though, firstly they can't be wider than the equivalent original game sprite or they glitch out and stretch across the screen, and second they had access to a much larger 16-bit palette on the PlayStation, so some use colours that don't map well to the 8-bit PC version and look weird in dark areas.
I also show the trees towards the end - their colour palette does not map well, and they are much larger than the original game trees, so they visibly extend further into the ground, which looks weird on rotation.
