After listening to some sound differences between my Bach recordings and @ChrisThile’s Bach recordings, I noticed that my recordings have a lot more sense of me “plucking at” the string, whereas for Chris the sound just “exits” his instrument more. So, tonight’s practice was focused solely on holding the pick much closer to the spine and increasing volume by flowing across the string faster, rather than plucking down through it harder. It makes me feel like I’m going to have completely insufficient volume or tone, but really I think it just moves the whole tone spectrum out of “yell, and overpower the banjos” to “sing.” I have a lot of getting used to this yet, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.
