In this, the first of four videos on teaching kata, I discuss some basic strategies for teaching kata, as well as exploring why there is a need for a multi-staged approach to teaching kata.
I discuss:
Teaching the pattern
Using competition to motivate kids
Isolating stances and hand techniques
Posture
Transitions
Technicality
I was apprehensive about uploading this because I recognise that my kokutsu dachi is very flawed, and my posture in particular, is poor. This is due to a long-term spinal injury that makes it hard to keep a straight back in most of my stances. Ultimately, I felt that if I was prepared to expose my students to your commentary (with their permission) then I should be willing to put myself in the same position. I hope that you will overlook my personal inadequacies and take some benefit from my ideas.
